The pans coves around 25% of the National Park, and was originally a lake fed by the Kunene River. However the lake dried up when the course of the river changed thousands of years ago. Etosha Park is vast (23,000 sq. km) and is made up of wide, open grass planes and veld bushes that surround the pan area. There are a number of waterholes, spread out in strategic locations along the edges of the pan, attracting large concentrations of wildlife and birds, and are the prime spots for viewing game.
