SELF DRIVE: Namibia, Botswana - 21 Day Safari

This very popular safari explores the big attractions in Namibia including Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha. Then you continue north through the untamed Caprivi Strip and finish off with a visit to the world famous Chobe National Park in Botswana and back to N/A’an ku sê in Namibia.

TOUR DESCRIPTION

DAY 1: - Welcome to the land of sun, sand and smiles!
Welcome in Namibia.
You will arrive at Hosea Kutako International airport Windhoek Namibia. The airport might be small but it is more important that you start your adventurous journey. One of our friendly representatives from All Round Namibia Tours will welcome you at the airport - look out for your name on our welcoming sign. We will gladly assist you with your luggage and shown your to the foreign exchange counters. Although there are many have electronic banking points available at lodges and hotel we advise that you take some cash along for curio shopping along the way. From there on you will be transferred to the Olive Grove Guesthouse.

Olive Grove Guesthouse
Olive Grove is a small upmarket accommodation establishment situated close to Windhoek city centre in a quiet, peaceful area. Recently completely refurbished, each room has been decorated and painted with new colour schemes allowing a different feel, but with the same elegant and simplistic emphasis on décor. Olive Grove Guesthouse also have a restaurant onsite for the guests to enjoy dinner without driving to a restaurant. The afternoon a representative of All Round Namibia or the car rental company will deliver you the 4x4 D/Cab (Bakkie as we call it) at Klein Windhoek Guesthouse where you can complete all paperwork for the duration of the rental period. The representative of All Round Namibia will go through your itinerary with you and explain all the musts and musts not do on the road and give all your vouchers for your stay at lodges. Please take note that we do recommend our clients to leave early from lodges in the morning at around 08h00 so that you will have enough driving time and also to arrive mid-afternoon at your new destination to do activities at the lodges.

DAY 2: - OLIVE GROVE GUESTHOUSE – BAGATELLE KALAHARI GAME RANCH/

Enjoy a relaxing breakfast before departing to Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch. Today’s road will take approximately 3 hours to drive to the Ranch. It is approximately 270 km.

Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch
Bagatelle - this is the French word meaning ‘something small, of little consequence, not very important’. The lodge are located on the brink of the Southern Kalahari in the mixed tree and shrub Savanna. This ranch is branded by gigantic red sands dunes running parallel and in a northern-westerly to south-easterly direction.
The accommodation stand out as unique wooden stilt chalets on top of the dune belt offer a supreme view and it is seamless to see and inhale the beautiful colours and smells of the Kalahari.


Activity: They offer a variety of great activities such as the morning Cheetah viewing, the morning Bushmen walk to their village, Horseback safaris, relaxing treatments, helicopter flights, scenic drives and many more.

DAY 3: - BAGATELLE KALAHARI GAME RANCH – NEURAS WINERY AND WILDLIFE ESTATE

After a delightful breakfast take the C20 road to Mariental and from there you can take the C19 driving West. Continue with the C19 through Maltahöhe for about 130km and take the right turn off on the D854. After approximately 32 km you can then take the turn off on the right, D850. Within about 14km you will see the signs of Neuras on your left hand side.
The total kilometres for today’s drive are approximately 330km which will take around 4 hours driving.

Neuras Wine and Wildlife Estate
In the local Koikoi language, Neuras means ‘place of abandoned water’. Neuras Estate owes its early existence as a farm to the presence of several crystal clear cold-water springs and dates back to 1894.
The Neuras Estate extends southwards from the top of the majestic Naukluft Mountains and is typical of the pro-Namib geological and natural environment. Ancient canyons with huge banks of stromatolites and fascinating geological formations including the 548 million year old Namacolathus fossils provide marvellous opportunities for nature hikes.


Activity: Activities at Neuras offer the opportunity to experience wine tasting and vineyard tours, as well as wildlife tours, among others.

DAY 4: - NEURAS WINERY AND WILDLIFE ESTATE – SOSSUSVLEI LODGE

Delight in a delicious breakfast before leaving Neuras to drive to Sossusvlei Lodge. Today’s journey to Sossusvlei Lodge will be approximately 65 km which will take around 50 minutes to reach. From Neuras you can take the D850 driving west and then take the left turn off on the D854. Continue for about 32 km before turning right on the C19. It will be around 30km before reaching Sossusvlei Lodge on your left-hand side.

Sossusvlei Lodge
Situated adjacent to the oldest desert in the world, Sossusvlei Lodge is a comfortable retreat in this premier tourist attraction area in Namibia. Sheltered by camel thorn trees, the Lodge blends in perfectly with the spectacular desert environment and accepts testament to the originality of an eco-friendly design. A dip in the crystal clear pool or an ice-cold beer under the shady trees in the Acacia beer garden makes for the best relaxation after an eventful day. The al fresco terrace offers magnificent views of the well-lit waterhole where you can watch the passing parade of Oryx, Springbok, Jackal, ground Squirrel and Hyena, whilst enjoying superb food and wine. This is indeed a visual and culinary contrast, bearing in mind the relative remoteness of this exceptional location.

DAY 5 & 6: - SOSSUSVLEI LODGE – SEA BREEZE GUESTHOUSE

Enjoy an early morning breakfast before visiting Dune 45, Big Daddy, the Deadvlei and the Sesriem Canyons. Today’s journey will be approximately a 5 hour drive without stopping. Sossusvlei Lodge is about 360 km away from Sea Breeze Guesthouse.

Sea Breeze Guesthouse
Established at the end of 1999, Sea Breeze Guesthouse is situated in Vineta, in the northern part of Swakopmund, a mere ten minutes’ drive from the town centre. The ocean can be reached in a few minutes’ walk. Accommodation comprises of triple, double and single rooms, all with en-suite bathroom, as well as self-catering units, which can accommodate up to five people, with kitchenette and en-suite bathroom. One unit is completely wheelchair friendly with bathroom and room customized to accommodate disabled persons. Our facility includes laundry service, secure parking, internet and Wi-Fi. They can assist and advise about the activities in and around Swakopmund and they are more than willing to book it for you. They will discuss and book your dinner reservation when you arrive at Sea Breeze. Sea Breeze Guesthouse is a family business and your needs are their concern. They are always happy to spend time with you, providing information about the coast and – more in general – about Namibia.

DAY 7: - SEA BREEZE GUESTHOUSE – DAMARA MOPANE LODGE

After a nice and early breakfast prepare for today’s long drive that will carry on through the ruggedly beautiful Damaraland. En-route to Damara Mopane Lodge you can visit the old rock engravings, paintings and the organ pipes. Today’s journey will be approximately 320km, however one must drive slow on the gravel roads and therefore it is possible that it will take you between 5 and 6 hours without stops.
Damara Mopane Lodge Situated near Khorixas en-route to the famed Twyfelfontein engravings, Damara Mopane Lodge incorporates the spirit of Damaraland and the Damara people, extending its hand to locals and visitors alike in a `Hello neighbour` greeting, linking cultures and nationalities. Damara Mopane Lodge is a Damaraland lodge that charms guests with its original themes, touching hearts and eliciting smiles. Whether sitting on your stoep looking out onto your vegetable garden, swimming in the pool or celebrating sunset from the deck, this novel and delightful lodge provides a good base from which to explore the rich sandstone treasure of Damaraland.

DAY 8 & 9: - DAMARA MOPANE LODGE – ETOSHA VILLAGE

Enjoy a relaxing breakfast before departing to the Etosha National Park. Today will take you around 3 and a half hours without any stops via the C39 to Outjo and then take the turn of on the C38. Continue on the C38 for about 95km or until you see the sign turning off to Etosha Village. The distance to travel for today is approximately 210km.

Etosha National Park
The meaning of the word ‘Etosha’ is ‘place of dry water’. Etosha is enclosed in a vast, even calcrete depression (or pan) which area are about 5 000km². The Park was first established in 1907, when Namibia was colonised by the Germans and known as South West Africa. The Etosha National Park spans 23 000 km² of savannah and shrub lands, supporting up to 114 different mammal species, including the threatened Black Rhinoceros and endemic Black-nosed Impala. There are also about 300 different bird species. The ‘Pan’ provides a great, parched, silver-white backdrop of shining mirages to an area of semi-arid savannah grassland and thorn scrub. Only after a good rainy season the pan will have water, most of the time only for a few days a year, but it is enough to motivate the progress of a blue-green algae which pulls in thousands of flamingos.

Etosha Village
Etosha Village is situated a short distance from the Anderson Gate. This lodge is the key destination for nature lovers combined with great service and food. Etosha Village, taking its modern styling cues from a traditional African village, combines affordability with comfort and style in a private and protected reserve directly adjacent to the Etosha National Park, near Okaukuejo. At Etosha Village nature and luxury are in perfect harmony through design and comfort. Besides the 40 accommodation units, Etosha Village has three restaurant seating areas, a unique bar with a big screen television, two sparkling pools plus a kiddie pool as well as a fully stocked utility and curio shop.

DAY 10: - ETOSHA VILLAGE – MUSHARA LODGE

Delight in a hearty breakfast before departing through the Etosha National Park to the Eastern side to Mushara Lodge. Today will take you around 3 hours without any stops via the C38 through the Park. It is approximately a 180 km drive, however remember that you can only drive about 60km per hour inside the Park.

Mushara Lodge
Located just 8 km from the Von Lindequist Gate on the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park, Mushara Lodge is an ideal overnight stop for visitors to the game reserve.
The name Mushara is derived from the Purple Pod Terminalia tree which grows abundantly on the lodge grounds and in the surroundings. The thatched public area includes a small library with a selection of good books, a bar with an extensive wine cellar, an airy lounge complete with welcoming fireplace for winter evenings, a dining area and a well-stocked curio shop. Great attention has been paid to the décor, which is an eclectic blend of traditional African and modern works of art mixed with original older paintings.

DAY 11: - MUSHARA LODGE – HAKUSEMBE RIVER LODGE

Take joy in a delicious breakfast before departing to Rundu. Today the road will lead you to Hakusembe River Lodge which is approximately 350km away from Mushara Lodge. The drive will be about 5 and a half hours without making any stops along the way.

Hakusembe River Lodge
Entering Hakusembe River Lodge at the end of the winding gravel track, you are greeted with a refreshing image of green lawn, large trees, a collection of thatched chalets and a strip of sparkling river. Instantaneously the fresh balm of beauty soothes your weary soul. You have reached the verdant Hakusembe river oasis. A feeling of calm descends. And it remains present for the time of your visit. River birds fly up between the reeds, people row their dugout canoes on the river and soft muted sounds float over the waters from the villages on the far bank. As you sit on the floating deck, legs up, book in hand absorbing the peace to the accompaniment of bird calls and the gentle splashing of water, all worldly worries float away.
Those who can muster the energy to move can cool off at the pool in the luxuriant garden, try their luck at catching the elusive tiger fish, take a stroll to the Mbunza cultural village and hop aboard the Hakusembe River Queen. Situated 16km from Rundu in the Kavango region, this gem of a lodge (with campsite) provides that necessary break from the road. It`s one of the Caprivi accommodation treasures to discover - and frequent - when in the northern reaches of the country. It will soon be etched into itineraries, breaking the long haul from Windhoek and Etosha to the Zambezi and Vic Falls. DAY 12: - HAKUSEMBE RIVER LODGE – NAMUSHASHA RIVER LODGE

Enjoy an early breakfast before departing to Namushasha River Lodge which is about 430 km from Hakusembe River Lodge. Today will be a 5 to 6 hour drive without making any stop overs.

DAY 13 & 14: - NAMUSHASHA RIVER LODGE – CHOBE GAME LODGE

Delight in an early breakfast before departing to Chobe Marina Lodge which is about 260 km from Namushasha Lodge. Today will be a 4 to 5 hour drive without making any stop overs. Head east on the C49/M125 for about 3.5 km. Then drive with the B8 and A33 to North West Botswana. This is approximately 244 km before you reach the turn off to your destination on the left going to Serondela.

This route crosses a country border.

Chobe Game Lodge

DAY 15 & 16: - CHOBE GAME LODGE – SAVUTI CAMP

Enjoy a hearty breakfast before departing to Savuti Camp. This journey will take approximately 4 and a half hours even though it is only 163km. Continue with the road North West for about 8.5 km. Take a sharp right onto the upper road A33, continue with the road for about 50km. Drive to the transit road in Savuti and continue driving for 106km, this journey will take about 3 and a half hours to complete.

Savuti Camp

DAY 17 & 18: - SAVUTI CAMP – THAMALAKANE RIVER LODGE

After you have enjoyed a delicious breakfast your journey will take you to Thamalakane River Lodge close to Maun. It will be a 200km drive today without stops which will take about 5 hours as you have to drive slowly on these roads.

Thamalakane River Lodge
Thamalakane River Lodge is placed on the banks of the Thamalakane River, just 19kms from Maun, and en route to the famous Moremi Game Reserve.
En-suite stone chalets, some with private splash pools are positioned in the shade of the riverine forest, overlooking the river. Chalets, public areas and our swimming pool take advantage of the 180 degree view of the riverbanks lined with fluttering reeds visited by an ever changing array of water fowl, and birds and the occasional hippo. It is a delightful place to come home to after a day spent exploring.
Our widely acclaimed restaurant serves a la carte and buffet style meals from an ever changing menu. Dusk is spectacular, with the sun setting the river ablaze as is slowly dips behind the trees.

DAY 19: - THAMALAKANE RIVER LODGE – GHANZI TRAIL BLAZERS

Enjoy an early breakfast in order to depart to Ghanzi Trail Blazers. The journey is about 320 km long today and approximately 4 and a half hours.

Awake to the birdcalls of the Kalahari and prepare yourself for a day in the bushveld.
Ghanzi Trail Blazers caters for visitors wishing to have a genuine glimpse of a fast disappearing unique and ancient culture. We offer a number of activities to interact with the San/Bushman, and to discover how the San/Bushman survived in the Kalahari.
Ghanzi Trail Blazers is located far enough away from the main road to enjoy the real African bushveldt (approximately 4km).
Activity: Choose going for a walk, swimming at the old Quarry or enjoying a traditional dance with the San people or enjoy an afternoon Game drive.

DAY 20: - GHANZI TRAIL BLAZERS – SANDUNE KALAHARI GAME LODGE

Have a hearty breakfast before departing to SanDune Kalahari Game Lodge close to Gobabis. Continue to the A3 road for about 5 km and then take the A2 and B6 to the C22 in Omaheke. The part on the A2 and B6 will a 305 km drive. After that, continue on the C22 to your destination. Today’s road will be 330 km which will take you up to 5 hours to drive without making stops. This route crosses a country border.

Ghanzi Trail Blazers
SanDune Kalahari Game Lodge is a 4600ha fenced game farm with more than 1000 wildlife animals & more than 13 species, situated in the Kalahari Forest area, 160km east from Windhoek International Airport on the B6 route to Botswana Buitepos Border Post. The lodge consists of a guest house, a wooden bush lodge and luxury safari tented en-suite accommodation. The comfortable main dining area, covered under shade trees with a panoramic view on a waterhole can be enjoyed 24 hours with self service facilities with drinks and snacks. DAY 21: - SANDUNE KALAHARI GAME LODGE - N/A’AN KU SÊ (NAANKUSE) LODGE AND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

After enjoying breakfast you can drive to your next destination which will be Naankuse Lodge. You can follow the C22 to B6 in Gobabis. From the B6 you can take the D1502 in Khomas. The road between on the B6 leading to the D1502 will be approximately 151km. From the D1502 you can turn left onto the M53, follow this road until you have reached your destination.

N/A’an ku sê (Naankuse) Lodge and Wildlife Sanctuary
Located only thirty minutes from Hosea Kutako International Airport amongst camel thorn trees, riverbeds, and a stone canyon, the Naankuse Lodge is perfectly situated to finish your trip in Namibia. They have a range of enjoyable activities available, including carnivore feeding tours, and cheetah walks, you are sure to enjoy an unforgettable African holiday with them.
The history of the Naankuse Lodge in Namibia is relatively short. The lodge was established in 2007 and was started thanks to some of their supporters who followed their inspiration to create an eco-friendly destination. Not only did they want to offer people traveling through Namibia an opportunity to stay somewhere that gave back to Namibia’s wildlife, but they also wanted to offer the San Bushman community a new opportunity to develop job skills in the hospitality industry. Naankuse is dedicated to playing an important role in conservation and the protection of the Namibian wildlife, land and people. The Lodge is created from ecologically clean material including solid logs and glass to balance N/a’an ku sê’s lovely setting in the wilderness.

DAY 22: - N/A’AN KU SÊ (NAANKUSE) LODGE AND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY – HUSEA KUTAKO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Today is the last day in Namibia. Enjoy a delicious breakfast and maybe even one last activity if time allows. Please arrange with your lodge or our company for check out time depending on your flight departure time. If you wish to make use of a room for a couple of hours before departing for the airport please arrange this in advance which will be at an additional cost. Your guide or transfer company will pick you up for your transfer to the airport at a pre-arranged time. Please remember that you should be at the airport 2 hours before the flight departs. Vehicle:
You will drive a comfortable 4x4 Double Cab vehicle perfect for the Namibian off-road conditions. If you choose the camping option then the vehicle will be equipped with all your camping equipment. An off-road trailer is also available.

All accommodation will be in top quality lodges and in a guest-house in Windhoek and Swakopmund. If you prefer the camping option you will camp at carefully chosen campsites except for Windhoek, Swakopmund. If you like to extend your days on some lodges you can book this when you finalize your trip with us.

Meals:
All accommodation is on a Bed and Breakfast basis. No lunch or Dinner is included. For the camping option breakfast is included in Windhoek and Swakopmund.

Activities and park fees:
Since this is a self-drive safari which you will be doing at your own pace no activities and park fees are included. We would be happy to recommend which activities mentioned in the itinerary to do and we will book them for you.

Travel to and from Namibia:
This is not included in the price
