Wake up early and leave your lodge, heading for the Sesriem entrance gate to the Namib Naukluft Park. This gate only opens at sunrise, While the sun rises is a real pleasure. The first major dune you will encounter goes by the imaginative name of Dune 45 - many people choose to stop and climb this dune to take some amazing photo snapshots of the lovely sunrise over the beautiful dunes of Namibia but we suggest you continue onwards towards Sossusvlei. Park at the the 2x4 car park (unless you have a 4x4 vehicle this is as far as you can drive), Sossusvlei is a further 4km from here but you are already amongst fairly large dunes. Etosha is truly a Namibian jewel! The name Etosha means "Great White Place", and the name suits the landscape, which is dominated by a massive mineral pan. The pans coves around 25% of the National Park, and was originally a lake fed by the Kunene River. However the lake dried up when the course of the river changed thousands of years ago. The pan is now a large dusty depression of salt and dusty clay which fills only if the rains are heavy and even then only holds water for a short time during good rainy seasons.

Subject to availability in the park it could be that you have to stay just outside the gate of Etosha Anderson Gate and have to drive in that takes you approximately 15minutes. Etosha Park is a vast (23,000 sq. km) contains wide, open grass planes and veld bushes that surround the pan area.
